Mozambique Expansion of Rural Cattle and Dairy Opportunities

Developing a more competitive dairy sector in Mozambique

MERCADO is a Food for Progress initiative funded by USDA. In partnership with Tillers International, MERCADO increased agricultural productivity in the dairy sector and expanded the potential for trade among nearly 10,000 dairy participants, including smallholder farmers, mini-agribusinesses, processors, retailers, feed manufacturers, cooperatives, and commercial breeders.

MERCADO built on past USDA investments in both Manica and Sofala provinces to support private sector investments across the dairy value chain. MERCADO trained dairy producers on improved dairy practices and farm management, expanded access to dairy inputs, and eased access to finance for dairy producers, input suppliers, aggregators, processors, and retailers. With USDA’s investment, MERCADO expects to catalyze significant growth in dairy production in Manica and Sofala provinces by 2026. The private-public partnerships formed through MERCADO added 120% increase in sales of dairy products produced in Mozambique and leveraged almost one-million dollars in private-sector co-investment.
