USDA International Outreach to Advance U.S. Interests in Enhancing the Participation of Countries in Codex

Improving food safety by boosting engagement in global food standards by partnering with the U.S. Codex Office and its members.

2022 – 2027

Codex Alimentarius is a global collection of food standards that aims to protects consumers while supporting fair trade. The U.S. Codex Office (USCO), housed within USDA’s Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs mission, works with stakeholders to advance these standards worldwide.
The Codex Outreach Project supports the efforts of the USCO by partnering with national governments and regional organizations across the Middle East, Asia, and the Southwest Pacific to strengthen engagement in Codex to ensure food standards are globally relevant, protect consumer health, and promote fair trade practices. By organizing colloquiums to educate and prepare representatives from these regions to contribute to the Codex Alimentarius Commission, creating explanatory documents, and developing focused trainings, the project is amplifying the voices of underrepresented nations in setting international food standards. The Codex Outreach Project is implemented in partnership with the Global Food Regulatory Science Society (GFoRSS).
