DNA presents: Tanzania Consumer Survey 2021
Key Impacts of COVID-19 on the Dairy Industry
Africa, already home to over 1.3 billion people, is leading the world in population growth, with the population set to nearly double over the next 30 years. Such explosive growth complicates valiant efforts to eradicate poverty, combat hunger and malnutrition, and to cope with a changing climate and dramatic weather patterns, leaving a pressing need to transform food systems to be more resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.

The global COVID-19 pandemic adds another layer to the already pressing challenges, putting at risk any progress for economic growth. However, it also presents us with a unique opportunity to build back a more inclusive economy. Agriculture, especially animal sourced foods, are critical in advancing and creating inclusive growth opportunities, and nourishing populations worldwide. Dairy provides a unique opportunity in that it not only is it an effective way to enhance the nutrition of rural and urban populations, while supporting livelihoods across the value chain, but it serves as a daily source of income.

The DNA pilot (in Tanzania) conducted an in-depth consumer survey to understand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dairy industry in East Africa. Throughout this document you will find an overview of the highlights of this work.
